Abstract

The methodology for estimation of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of sandy soils is described, which is based on analysis of automated observations of the moisture content of soil profile after rains at the experimental site, situated in Chernobyl exclusion zone within the "Red Forest " radioactive waste dump area at 2 km distance from the ChNPP. The following dependence is obtained for unsaturated hydraulic conductivity K (m/day) from soil suction pressure ψ (cm of wat. column): K(ψ) = 5,7 exp (-0,13 ψ). The advantage of the method is that unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is determined in conditions of undisturbed soil profile in the range of suction pressure values, which is characteristic for the natural regime of unsaturated zone.
