Background. In the areas of the Kura-Gabirri and Yevlakh-Aghjabedi Depressions, the forecasting of the oil and gas prospects of the Maykop sediments was carried out. For this purpose the lithofacies-reservoir parameters, paleotectonic, geochemical, and geotemperature conditions of the Maykop sediments were studied. For solving these problems, the thickness of the Maykop sediments, the conditions and rate of sediment accumulation, the parameters of the reservoirs forming the sedimentary layer, the determination of the amount of organic matter for the selection of oil layers were considered.
Methods. Considering that the thickness of the sedimentary layer is one of the main criteria for forecasting of oil and gas prospects, maps of the change in the thickness of the Maykop sediments were constructed and analyzed in the Kura-Gabirri and Yevlakh-Aghjabedi areas.
Results. The change in the accumulation rate of Maykop sediments was considered based on the average normal section of the sedimentary layer of the local uplifts of the Kura-Gabirri and Yevlakh-Aghjabedi depressions. The sedimentation rate creates quite favorable conditions for the accumulation and preservation of organic matter. The mass content of Corg. in clays of Maykop series is 2.0–5.0 % and more. In the studied fields of the Kura-Gabirri and Yevlakh-Aghjabedi basins, the Maykop sediments are characterized by the presence of sandy-silty bands of great thickness, sufficient volume and filtration properties, capable of preserving hydrocarbon accumulations, and the depth of the Maykop corresponds to the upper part of the OPTIMAL reservoir zone.
Conclusions. The results of bituminological studies conducted on a large number of clay rocks samples show that sedimentation in the Maykop basin occurred under favorable geochemical conditions. The geothermal conditions of the region were analyzed. The oil-bearing rocks belonging to the stratigraphic interval from the top of the Maykop to the middle of the Sarmatian in the Kura-Gabirri area are actually in the lower zone of oil and gas formation. The main zone of oil formation in the Yevlakh-Aghjabedi depression covers the sedimentary interval from the upper part of the Eocene to the base of the Chokrak horizon, and the main zone of gas formation covers the interval from the upper part of the Jurassic sediments to the top of the Lower Eocene.
